Under certain conditions, it can even be\u00a0turned into a superconductor\u00a0that carries electricity with zero resistance.<\/p>\n<p>That means the material has the potential to make better electronics, more effective solar cells, and could even be used in medicine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>Last year, a study suggested that graphene could help mobile phone batteries last\u00a025 percent longer, and the material has the potential to\u00a0filter fuel out of thin air.<\/p>\n<p>But these applications have been limited by the fact that graphene usually has to be made in a vacuum at intense heat using purified ingredients, which makes it expensive to produce.<\/p>\n<p>Until we can find a cost-effective way to mass produce the over-achieving material, it\u2019s pretty much limited to labs.<\/p>\n<p>But scientists in Australia have now managed to create graphene in normal air conditions, using cheap soybean cooking oil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis ambient-air process for graphene fabrication is fast, simple, safe, potentially scalable, and integration-friendly,\u201d\u00a0said one of the researchers, Zhao Jun Han\u00a0from Australia\u2019s CSIRO.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur unique technology is expected to reduce the cost of graphene production and improve the uptake in new applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team has called the new technique \u2018GraphAir\u2019 technology, and it involves heating\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.htoilmachine.com\/pro\/soybean-oil-processing-c-21\/\">soybean oil<\/a> in a tube furnace for about 30 minutes, causing it to decompose into carbon building blocks.<\/p>\n<p>This carbon is then rapidly cooled on a foil made of nickel, where it diffuses into a thin rectangle of graphene that\u2019s just 1 nanometre thick (about 80,000 times thinner than a human hair).<\/p>\n<p>Not only is this technique cheaper and easier than other methods, it\u2019s also a lot quicker \u2013 to create graphene in a vacuum takes several hours.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_70016\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1093\" src=\"https:\/\/www.htoilmachine.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/93882896_img_0991-2.jpg\" width=\"624\" height=\"415\" alt=\"CSIRO\" \/><\/figure>\n<h2>More Cheap Options<\/h2>\n<p>Zhao\u00a0told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC)\u00a0that the technique could reduce the cost of making graphene 10-fold.<\/p>\n<p>Not only that, but it offers a more sustainable option for recycling waste cooking oil.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe can now recycle waste oils that would have otherwise been discarded and transform them into something useful,\u201d\u00a0said one of the team, Dong Han Seo.<\/p>\n<p>The question now is whether this new technique can be scaled up \u2013 finding a cheaper way to make graphene is awesome, but the graphene film\u00a0produced so far\u00a0was only 5 cm (1.9 inches) by 2 cm (0.8 inches) in size.<\/p>\n<p>The team says that the largest film they can make using the technique right now is around the size of a\u00a0credit card.<\/p>\n<p>To really make graphene fit for commercial use, researchers will need to produce films that are a whole lot larger than that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe potential\u2019s enormous,\u201d David Officer, a graphene expert from the University of Wollongong in Australia, who wasn\u2019t involved in the study,\u00a0told the ABC.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[But] the question will be whether you can economically scale a method like this, where they\u2019ve sealed it inside a furnace tube, to create and handle metre-sized films.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The team is now looking for commercial partners to pursue this goal.<\/p>\n<p>But they\u2019re not the only researchers working on it \u2013 last week, a team from\u00a0Kansas State University patented a simple technique\u00a0that creates graphene using only hydrocarbon gas, oxygen, and a spark plug.
